For centuries, playing cards lacked corner indices. In 1864, Cyrus W. Saladee patented (No. 41,587) the idea of printing numbers, suit symbols, letters, and miniature cards in the corners. Samuel Hart bought the patent, branding the deck and Ace of Spades with Saladee's name. This historic deck, known as the Saladee's Patent Deck, predates later indexed decks like the Squeezers and Triplicates by a dozen years.
